Boat Terminology
A boat consists of balancing structures known as hulls and system of propulsion like a screw, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail, paddlewheels or a water jet. The front part of the boat is known as the 'bow' or 'prow', while the rear is referred to as the 'stern'. The right side of a boat is called 'starboard' and the left is called as the 'port'. The 'deck' is referred to the horizontal structure that is across the hull.
A boat usually has only one deck while a ship has more than one. A 'coach-roof' is similar to a deck but is generally across a cabin that is raised. The floor of the cabin is either known as the 'sole' or as a 'floor' itself. The part that is under the deck is called as the 'deck head'. The vertical structures, which separate the inside spaces are known as the 'bulkheads.'
